1913 plaster walls - was lead paint used on walls?

The paint comes off in sheets. Under the paint there is a chaulk like "paint" that is blue. Is this the calcimine (sp?) that has been referred to in other discussions? The chaulk blue can be washed off with water. However, under it in some areas there is a gloss paint. Should I be concerned with lead paint at this layer.

You can check for lead paint with LeadCheck brand sticks. Basically there is a q-tip like swab at one end which you rub against the paint after activating the fluid inside. If it turns pink or red the paint has lead. The directions are easy and the swabs are easy to use.

Howdy where does a home owner find the test strip kits?

I ordered online from the LeadCheck website. (just google "leadcheck") PS I don't work for them!

Thanks for the details. I've been enjoying renovation nation but they never disclose any of the way cool new products they use...
