My new recessed medicine cabinet is 14" wide but my studs are 14.5 to 14.6 inches apart. How should I make up the difference? Thank you.
Center the cabinet in the hole, make sure that all edges of the hole are covered by the cabinet frame. Insert machine screws through holes in one side of the cabinet and drive them in until they just touch the cabinet. Do the same with the other side to secure the cabinet in place. You want the screws to be just tight enough to hold the cabinet from moving, but not so tight as to distort the cabinet. Done. Grab a beer and admire your work.
My favorite part of the job.

you could use shim screws.
Another approach is to use 1/4" strips as spacers on both sides of the cabinet.
Use paint stir sticks (free at home depot and lowes).
The loose fit is intended because sometimes the framer gets a bit off and studs are bowed. It doesn't need to contact framing on either or both sides. Do as A.Spruce said, and feel free to substitute whatever beverage you prefer upon completion- just be sure to admire your work ;)
