How do I decorate an above fireplace mantel? – Kelli Z., Belgium
Start With a Statement Piece: Mirror or Art
I’ve been getting a lot of fireplace questions! The most popular way to decorate a mantle above a fireplace would be a large mirror. This could be a mantle specific mirror which is meant to lean on the mantle and attach to the wall at the top, like this or this for a more modern style, or this for a more traditional style. You can also do a long rectangular mirror like this or a round mirror like this hanging on the wall 4-5 inches above the mantle.
Even more than a mirror though, I love a piece of art above a mantle, either a landscape orientation piece hanging on the wall 4-5 inches above the mantle, or a portrait orientation piece leaning on the mantle and against the wall.
Choosing the Right Size for Balance
When it comes to sizing, the length of the mirror or art should be around two-thirds the length of the mantle.
Layering Decor on the Mantel
Then along the actual mantle you can layer coffee table books with tall candlesticks and a vase or planter. If you want to incorporate ambient lighting around the mantle, you can also add two sconces along the sides.
