Generation NEXT Letters | Scott Carothers
Director of Certification and Training, Ceramic Tile Education Foundation ceramictilefoundation.org
As the Director of Certification and Training for the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation, I am constantly looking for ways to encourage young people to enter into the ceramic tile trade. We realize the significant shortfall of incoming craftspeople versus the retirement of existing workers.
This morning, my daughter gave me the Jan/Feb 2017 issue of This Old House which featured the Generation Next article illustrating your support of the Mike Rowe Works Foundation which interests me greatly.
Our organization, the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF) is working with our sister organization, the National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA), in the development of their online apprenticeship program which will provide entry-level workers with the background knowledge to augment their daily hands-on work with a "good" tile contractor. This is a start in the right direction.
Recently, I became involved with the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) which will be hosting their Career Expo in Atlanta on March 23-24, 2017. We are working to create a ceramic tile test for the SkillsUSA competition which will coincide with the Career Expo. Presently there is no ceramic tile test in SkillsUSA, which is why we are focused getting this program started in Georgia.
Please visit our website www.ceramictilefoundation.org to learn more about what we are doing to assist the tile industry in moving to the next level. I've also written a blog article about Mike Rowe's testimony to Congress to help inform the tile industry of our ongoing dilemma.
