In North Carolina, where a community was severely flooded by the Swannanoa River, some of the rebuilds have reached the finish carpentry stage. Kevin O’Connor joins project manager Noah Swaty to assist in installing window trim. Together, they build a jamb box and a casing frame, fasten the two components, and set the assembled unit into the window opening.
Later, Kevin heads to Mountain Heritage High School to meet with teacher Jeremy Dotts, who runs the carpentry program. Jeremy and a few of his students tell Kevin that they are using what they’ve learned in class to give back to their community in a big way: building homes to donate to people in need after the storm.
Then, Kevin heads to North Asheville to meet with electrician Mario Salamone, who is installing a new meter box to replace the one damaged in the storm. He explains that updated electrical codes now require a larger meter with an integrated emergency disconnect and exterior-mounted circuit breakers.
Meanwhile, Tom Silva is in East Asheville helping homeowner Paula turn an antique chest into a bathroom vanity. He uses a template to transfer the locations of the plumbing lines and pipes on the wall to where they will meet the back of the vanity. Paula assists with cutting the holes.
