Shaky Deck

When the family dog is enough to make it vibrate, it's time for a fix

Q:

I built a large deck with nine posts as a foundation. My problem is
that it vibrates when anyone walks on it — even the dog! How do I
reinforce it so there is no vibration?

A:

Tom Silva replies: It sounds like the floor joists are spanning too great a
distance. The easiest way to correct the problem is to install a support
beam and posts under the joists to cut the span in half. I would use the
one-to-one ratio for sizing a beam and spacing the posts, i.e. a
ten-foot span needs two 2x10s.
