Setting Stones in Garden Beds

It's all in the drainage

Q:

What different types of bricks and stones can be used to line outdoor planting beds, and what materials and steps are involved in the project?

– John, San Francisco, California

A:

Roger Cook replies: You can use any stone for edging beds, but brick, cobbles, bluestone, and granite are the traditional choices. The key is to excavate below them and install gravel for drainage. I use cement to hold them in place, but for a more rustic look you can set them in gravel and let them move a little.
