Moss in the Yard

Keeping moss off a backyard patio

Q:

I live in Michigan and have a partial-shade backyard. My problem is I have a lot of moss mixed in with sparse fescue. Most of the moss
is on the dirt, but it does creep onto the bricks and stone patio blocks.
What should I do to get rid of it or decrease the amount of it?

– Shona, Ann Arbor, Michigan

A:

Roger Cook replies: Moss on brick and stone patios can be attractive and take away the new look of stone masonry. Believe it or not, there are people who pay to have moss added to their landscape. Cutting back on trees and shrubs to relieve the shade situation, and over-seeding with a shade-tolerant grass seed should take care of your moss problem.
