Insulating an Old Home

What's the best way to insulate a brick house?

Richard Trehewey holds a toilet

My husband and I have recently purchased a brick home built in 1872. Can we can insulate in the dead air space between the layers of brick? We have to put in a new heating system and would like to know if this is possible before we decide on what system to purchase.

Richard Trethewey replies: My mantra as a heating contractor is to insulate as much as you can before you change the heating or cooling system. Once the insulation is complete, have a heat loss or heat gain calculation performed to put the right size equipment in. So many of our country's mechanical systems are dramatically oversized.
If you are trying to tighten up your 1872 brick house, your hit list for insulating should be:

1. Roof insulation

2. Windows upgraded or weather tightened

3. Wall insulation
