Becoming a Preservationist
Where can I learn more about this field?
I am very interested in architectural preservation and history. Can you please give me some advice on how to learn more about this field?
—Luciana Spencer, Miami, Fla.
Kevin O'Connor replies: There are lots of ways to learn about preservation. If you're interested in hands-on craftsmanship, try a place like the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, South Carolina, or the North Bennet Street School in Boston, Mass. If you want primarily an academic approach, there are 38 graduate schools in the U.S. that offer courses in historic preservation. Many towns and cities also have historic preservation programs; volunteering at one would provide a good introduction to the field and be a great way to help your community.
