Norm Abram Speaks About the Skilled Trades at the International Builders' Show
February 9, 2018
In January, the National Association of Home Builders hosted its International Builders' Show in Orlando. Master Carpenter Norm Abram talked alongside Tony Mancini of the SGC Horizon Building Group with interviewer Adam Grubb of Professional Builder. The topic? The next generation of skilled tradespeople, which, as Norm articulates, is facing two main issues.
“One is, we need the funding to train these people,” he said. “But the more difficult part in my mind is going to be finding the people to get interested in the building trades.” This takes outreach and education, along with funding, which Mancini is hoping to raise with the Skilled Labor Fund. The funding, he says, provides scholarships to accredited schools. As these schools across the country recruit within their local areas, he hopes the efforts encourage a national campaign.
Most importantly, Norm and Mancini stress, is that people involved in the trades give support however they can: in volunteered knowledge, outreach, or funds.
