• In this video, This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey installs a cold-weather hose faucet.

    Steps:
    1. From inside the basement, use a tubing cutter to cut the cold-water pipe leading to the old sillcock. Use a bucket to catch any water that drains from the cut pipe.
    2. From outside the house, pull out and discard the old sillcock.
    3. Wrap Teflon tape around the male threads at the end of a new frost-proof sillcock.
    4. Thread a copper adapter onto the end of the sillcock; tighten with a wrench. 5. From outside, insert the frost-proof sillcock into the hole in the foundation wall.
    6. Hold the sillcock against the foundation and mark the mounting-screw locations.
    7. On each mark, drill a screw hole into the foundation with a masonry drill bit.
    8. Apply minimal-expanding foam insulation around the hole and then slide the frost-proof sillcock into place.
    9. Fasten the sillcock to the foundation wall with masonry screws.
    10. Use a wrench to unscrew and remove the stem from the sillcock.
    11. From inside the basement, use emery cloth to clean the end of the water-supply pipe.
    12. Using tubing cutter to cut piece of copper pipe to extend from copper adapter on sillcock to end of water-supply pipe.
    13. Apply flux to the ends of the piece of copper pipe.
    14. Then, slide a coupling onto the pipe and insert it between the adapter on the end of the sillcock and the end of the water-supply pipe.
    15. Solder the pipe and coupling to the adapter and water-supply pipe.
    16. Go outside and reinstall the stem into the sillcock; tighten with a wrench.
    17. Turn on the water and check your work.
