In this video, This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook explains how to building a simple sandbox.
Step-by-Step
1. Cut the four sides for the box out of pressure treated lumber. You can download Templates here.
2. Cut the pieces for the seat in the back, the brace that supports the hood, the decking that makes up the hood, the dashboard, and the circle for the steering wheel.
3. Drill pilot holes, then screw the box together at the four corners.
4. Attach the seat at the back.
5. Cut notches into the dashboard piece. Screw it on along with the piece that goes down flat in front of it.
6. Attach the other pieces of the hood with hinges.
7. Paint or stain the car.
8. While the stain is drying, clear a flat spot on the ground for the sandbox.
9. Position the sandbox and check it for level in all directions.
10. Line the inside of the box with landscape fabric and staple it in place.
11. Fill the box with playground sand.
12. Put on the handles for the hood, then cover the steering wheel with a wheel cover and screw it to a block behind the dashboard. -
