In the workshop, general contractor Tom Silva demonstrates the proper way to use hand planes. Then, Tom, along with host Kevin O'Connor, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, and landscape contractor Roger Cook ask "What Is It?" Afterward, Roger helps a homeowner repair a cracked stone walkway.
Hand Plane Technique
Tom demonstrates the proper way to use hand planes.
Where to find it?
Tom demonstrated several types of hand plane, including bench planes, shouldering planes, and block planes. He also showed a sharpening stone for sharpening plane blades. The planes and sharpening stones are available at hardware stores, home centers, and specialty woodworking stores.
What Is It?
Kevin asks the guys to identify a strange, yellow tool.

Kevin demonstrated the Deckkeeper, a tool that can secure outdoor furniture to decks. It is manufactured by LTL Home Products, Inc.
Repairing a Broken Stone Walkway
Roger helps a homeowner repair a cracked stone walkway.
Where to find it?
Roger used thin ¾-inch bluestone to replace the broken pieces, which he purchased from Martignetti Enterprises Inc.
Roger set the bluestone in a mix of stone dust and water. He then filled the joints with polymeric sand to prevent weeds and discourage insects. Stone dust and polymeric sand are available at masonry supply stores.
Roger demonstrated cutting stone with a 4-inch grinder with a diamond blade and a 7-inch worm drive saw with a diamond blade and a water attachment. These tools are available at masonry supply stores and hardware stores. - Episode #1110 of Season 11 of ATOH
