General contractor Tom Silva explains to a homeowner how ice dams form and how to prevent them. He then works with an insulation contractor to apply closed-cell spray foam in an attic. Then Tom, along with host Kevin O'Connor, landscape contractor Roger Cook, and plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey ask "What Is It?" Afterward, Richard shares a tip about connecting gutter downspouts. And Roger heads to Philadelphia to plant two trees on a busy city street.

Preventing Ice Dams
Tom helps a homeowner prevent ice dams from forming on his roof.

Where to find it?
Tom showed several ways to get rid of existing ice dams, including tossing a paper bag filled with ice melt behind the dam. Ice melt is available at hardware stores and home centers.

Tom also suggested aiming a fan at the eaves of your roof from inside the attic, blowing cold air from the attic at the dam. This will make the roof cold and prevent the ice dam from continuing to grow.

To prevent ice dams from forming, Tom installed closed-cell spray foam insulation into the roof rafter bays. A professional insulation contractor can provide this service. On this project, he worked with:

Viewer Tip: Crimping Downspouts
Richard shares a viewer tip about crimping downspouts.

Where to find it?
Instead of using a specialty tool, Richard clamps a scrap piece of tongue and groove flooring into a vice and hammers a 16d nail sideways into each corner of the downspout.

Downspouts, nails, and hardwood flooring are available at home centers.

Planting Street Trees
Roger plants two city trees in Philadelphia.
