Original Air Date: Week of March 24, 2011
General contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner remove a vinyl kitchen floor. Then host Kevin O'Connor tours a well-stocked architectural salvage yard for vintage house parts. Back in the workshop, Kevin and Tom, along with landscaping contractor Roger Cook and plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey ask, "What is it?" Afterward, Richard helps a homeowner eliminate a gurgling sound coming from his bathroom plumbing.
Removing a vinyl floor
Tom helped a homeowner remove an old vinyl floor, including the plywood underlayment. They began by removing the square, vinyl tiles using prybars, chisels, putty knives, and a hammer. With the vinyl tiles removed, they removed the ¼" plywood underlayment. The underlayment was installed before the cabinets, so Tom had to cut the floor around the cabinets using both a "toe kick" saw and an oscillating tool with a flush-cutting blade. Once all of the drywall screws holding the underlayment to the original floor were removed, they were able to remove the underlayment.

Plumbing Vent Problems
The homeowner explained to Richard that he heard a loud gurgling sound from his bathroom sinks whenever the toilet was flushed. Richard determined that the sound was caused by inadequate venting of the plumbing fixtures. In the attic, Richard cut into the vent line and discovered that it was clogged with water. He snaked the vent line with a camera to make sure that there weren't any other obstructions; he also adjusted the pitch of the pipe to make sure that water would not continue to clog the vent. He reattached the vent line and solved the problem, but only temporarily. Later, the homeowner discovered that the gurgling noise had returned. Back in the workshop, Richard said he realized that the original problem appeared only after a new toilet was installed. The new toilet flushed very quickly and therefore required more venting than the original toilet. To solve the problem, the homeowner will need to install a separate roof vent closer to the fixtures or install a one-way "air admittance valve" in the attic.
Where to find it?
In some situations, "air admittance valves" can be used for venting a drain line where a traditional vent would be impossible or impractical to install.
