Original Air Date: Week of October 7, 2010
Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey kicks off the 9th season of Ask This Old House by helping a homeowner in Canada install a new kitchen sink. Then, up in the loft, general contractor Tom Silva shows host Kevin O'Connor some tools that no home workshop should be without. Then, landscaping contractor Roger Cook and arborist Matt Foti rescue a tree from "volcano mulching."
Installing a new kitchen sink
Richard helped a Toronto area homeowner install a new sink in an existing kitchen island, using an innovative method of venting the drain line.

Richard installed a device called an "air admittance valve," used for venting a drain line where a traditional vent would be impossible or impractical to install.

Rescuing an improperly planted tree
Roger and certified arborist Matt Foti showed how to improve the health of a tree that had too much soil and mulch covering it's root flare, suffocating the tree. They blasted the excess soil and mulch away using a device called an "air spade," which exposed the upper part of the tree's root flare, giving the tree better access to oxygen, water, and nutrients.
