Original Air Date: Week of 03/04/2010
Landscaping contractor Roger Cook helps a homeowner revive a damaged lawn. Then, up in the loft, general contractor Tom Silva shows host Kevin O'Connor how to build a simple utility cart out of plywood. Next, plumbing & heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner fix a clogged kitchen sink drain.
Reviving a Damaged Lawn
Roger helped a homeowner repair portions of his lawn damaged by "snow mold," a fungal disease that can occur in winter from excess moisture and fertilizer. To repair the damaged sections of the lawn, Roger removed the dead grass and loosened the top of the soil using a steel rake. Next, he applied a starter fertilizer using a spreader. He then applied new grass seed and a layer of compost. Finally, he watered the newly-seeded lawn. When Roger returned six months later, he found a healthy and well-established lawn.
Where to Find It?
Fertilizer, grass seed and compost are available at many home and garden centers.
Building a Utility Cart
Up in the loft, Tom showed Kevin how to build a simple utility cart suitable for transporting tools and supplies in a basement, garage, or workshop. Tom cut the pieces for the cart from ¾" AC plywood using a circular saw and straightedge, and he used a 1" diameter hardwood dowel for the handle. He then assembled the pieces using pocket screws and added casters to the bottom.

Repairing a Clogged Kitchen Sink Drain
Richard helped a homeowner fix his clogged kitchen sink. Water had been draining very slowly from the sink's basin and the homeowner could not clear the clog with a plumbing snake. Upon disassembling the drain underneath the sink, Richard discovered that the clog was inside a "sanitary tee," a PVC fitting that connects the tailpiece under the sink to the p-trap. The fitting had a "diverter" inside, which caused food waste to accumulate and create a clog. To solve the problem, Richard replaced the PVC fitting with a metal one, which did not have a diverter.
