Installing a sliding glass door

Tom helped a pair of homeowners install a sliding glass door. After making sure the wall was not load bearing and that there were no electrical wires or plumbing pipes inside, Tom used a reciprocating saw to remove an old door, a window, and much of the existing wall. Next, he removed an old concrete curb using a sledgehammer and patched the concrete floor with cement. Then Tom created a level surface for the new door by scribing pressure-treated boards to the existing concrete floor. He framed a new door opening using 2x4 studs and covered them with plywood sheathing and tarpaper. Before setting the new sliding door jamb into the opening, Tom caulked the top jamb and bottom of the opening to prevent water intrusion. He then tilted the new jamb unit into place and made sure the sides were perfectly plumb before fastening it to the opening. Finally, after sealing around the doorjamb with insulating foam, Tom installed the glass panels and the installation was complete.
