General contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner install new aluminum gutters and downspouts. Then Tom, along with host Kevin O'Connor, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey and landscaping contractor Roger Cook ask, "What is it?" Afterward, Richard helps a homeowner install a new energy-efficient clothes washer and dryer.

Installing aluminum gutters

Tom helped a homeowner install new aluminum gutters on her home. Tom chose heavy-duty "K-style" gutters. First, he cut a hole for a downspout using a hole-saw in a drill. Next, he attached the end caps using caulking and a crimp tool. Then, he attached an inside "box miter" and joined the two gutter sections together using caulking and rivets. Tom then fastened the gutters to the fascia board using aluminum "hidden hangers," making sure to pitch the gutter toward the downspout. Lastly, Tom fastened the downspout to the house and dug a trench for a pipe that will carry the water away from the home's foundation.

Installing a new washer and dryer

Richard helped a homeowner install a new washer and dryer in a basement laundry area. First, they removed the "transport bolts" that secure and protect the drum inside of the washing machine. Next, they leveled the top of the washer and adjusted the leveling feet as necessary. They used stainless steel braided hoses for the hot and cold water supply connections. Next, Richard installed the wastewater discharge line between the washing machine and the "standpipe." Then Richard connected the gas line to the dryer using black steel piping. Finally, he ran galvanized steel pipe for the dryer vent to the outside of the building and the installation was complete.
