Original Air Date: Week of 02/26/2009
Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a California homeowner install a new type of "zoning" control for her forced-air heating and cooling system. Then Richard, along with landscaping contractor Roger Cook, host Kevin O'Connor and general contractor Tom Silva ask, "What is it?" Next, Tom helps a homeowner re-grout the tile floor in her master bathroom.
Zoning a forced-air heating and cooling system
Richard helps a California homeowner get room-by-room control of her forced-air heating and cooling system by installing a new type of "zoning" controller. The system works by inflating "dampers" that are installed in the registers of each room in the house. These dampers are thermostatically controlled to inflate or deflate and block air flow in each register, depending on what temperature each individual room's thermostat is set at.

Re-grouting a tile floor
Tom helped a homeowner re-grout a small tile floor in her master bathroom. The white-colored grout had become dirty and discolored and some of it had broken loose. Tom started by removing the topmost layer of old grout using carbide-tipped hand scrapers, being careful not to scratch the tiles. With the old grout removed, Tom thoroughly cleaned the old floor with a vacuum. He then applied a mixture of water and white vinegar with a sponge to remove any dirt or residue that might be on the tiles. When the floor was dry, Tom rinsed the floor with warm water and used thinset to reinstall a few tiles that had popped loose. Next, Tom mixed new "unsanded" grout with a latex additive and applied it over the entire floor, using a rubber "float" to push it into the joints. After applying the grout to the entire floor and letting it sit for several minutes, Tom used a wet sponge to remove all of the grout left on top of the tiles.
Many of the hand tools that Tom used for this project are manufactured by:
