Original Air Date: Week of 01/22/2009

General contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner clean, stain and seal his mahogany backyard deck. Then Tom, along with host Kevin O'Connor, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey and landscape contractor Roger Cook ask, "What is it?" Kevin makes a House call to Chicago to help a homeowner prevent sewage backup in her basement by replacing her flood control system. In the Ask This Old House loft, Tom and Richard share a viewer tip on how to remove a wood plug from a hole saw.

Cleaning and staining a backyard deck.

Tom helps a homeowner clean his dirty, weather-beaten mahogany deck and prepare it for staining. First, Tom sprayed regular water over the entire deck so that detergent wouldn't get absorbed into the wood. Next, using a garden-type pump sprayer, Tom sprayed a biodegradable detergent and water mixture onto the deck, scrubbed it with a stiff brush, and rinsed it with a garden hose. With the entire deck cleaned, Tom applied a borate to prevent any future growth of mildew. Next, Tom left the homeowner to apply a mixture of stain and polyurethane to add color and protect the deck against the weather. Later, up in the loft, Tom showed Kevin some other options for staining and sealing a wooden deck.

Installing a residential floor control system.

Kevin heads to Chicago, where he and a local plumbing contractor help a homeowner prevent sewage from flooding her basement during severe storms. The homeowner had an existing "backwater valve flood control" system, which had failed during a recent storm causing sewage to back up into her basement. Upon inspection, the contractor determined that both the "ejector pump" and "check valve" had failed and recommended replacing both with heavier-duty units. The components of the system are in an underground "vault" in the front yard, which had to be completely torn apart and rebuilt. After removing the old plastic check valve that had blown apart under pressure, a new one was installed. The new unit consists of two brass check valves in a cast-iron housing. This allows for sewage to flow toward the street, but not back toward the house.

What to find it?

The new flood prevention system was installed by:
