Original Air Date: Week of 01/15/2009

Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner convert a claw foot bathtub into a shower. Then Richard, along with host Kevin O'Connor, general contractor Tom Silva and landscape contractor Roger Cook ask, "What is it?" Later, Tom shows Kevin how to use different types of "fillers" for both wood and PVC trim. Then Roger helps a homeowner install a solar-powered fountain in her yard.

Converting a clawfoot tub into a shower.

Richard helped a homeowner convert her clawfoot bathtub into a shower by installing a new spout, riser and showerhead that come together in a kit. The kit also includes a ring for a shower curtain. After removing the old tub faucet, Richard installed a new one using plumber's putty for a watertight seal. Next, he attached the riser for the showerhead, using Teflon tape for the threaded connections. With the riser and showerhead mounted to the tub, Richard secured the riser to the wall using a support that was included with the kit. Before he could mount the shower curtain ring, Richard used a tubing cutter to make it shorter so that it would fit underneath a slanted ceiling directly above the tub.

Choosing and Using Wood Fillers

Up in the loft, Tom and Kevin discuss different types of fillers used for filling small holes and cracks in both wood and PVC trim. For interior, painted wood, Tom recommends products like spackle or water-based paintable fillers. He also showed how to make your own wood filler using sawdust and yellow carpenters' glue. For interior wood that will be stained, Tom recommends "stainable" wood fillers, either water or solvent based. For wood that has already been stained, Tom showed wax crayons and putties that are tinted to match a variety of wood stain colors. For very large cracks or holes inside the house, Tom recommends auto-body filler. For exterior use, Tom recommends a two-part flexible epoxy filler that will flex with the wood when it expend and contracts with changes in humidity. For trimboards that are made from PVC, Tom suggests a two-part acrylic adhesive that also works well as a filler for small nail and screw holes.

Installing a Solar-powered Fountain

Roger helped a homeowner install a new water feature in her backyard. After selecting a site for the fountain, Roger needed to create a perfectly level base. They started by digging out 6-8 inches of topsoil. Next, they laid a mixture of stone and stone dust, compacted it with a hand tamper, and checked it for level. Next, Roger set the heavy concrete fountain's base in place and shimmed it with stone dust underneath until it was perfectly level. With the base installed, Roger set the basin on top and installed a pump. Instead of a pump that uses electricity from the house, Roger installed one that is solar-powered. With the pump installed, Roger set the top piece in place, filled the basin with water, and the installation was complete.
