Original Air Date: Week of 01/01/2009
Landscaping contractor Roger Cook helps a homeowner in Charleston, South Carolina fix a sagging wooden gate. Then Roger, along with plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, host Kevin O'Connor, and general contractor Tom Silva ask, "What is it?" Then, Tom helps a homeowner replace his drafty old basement windows with new energy-efficient ones. Later, up in the loft, Tom and Richard discuss how to properly use different types of liquid foam insulation to prevent drafts.
Fixing a Sagging Wooden Gate
Roger heads to Charleston where he helps a homeowner repair a wooden gate that is sagging because its hinges have become detached. The existing hinges were small and not made for exterior use, so Roger replaced them with weather-resistant "butterfly" hinges that will support the weight of the gate.
Where to find it?
"Butterfly" gate hinges are available at home improvement centers and hardware stores.
Replacing Basement Windows
Tom helped a homeowner replace his old, drafty basement windows with new, energy-efficient ones. To remove the old windows, Tom used a reciprocating saw and a pry bar. Since the old windowsill was part of the old window unit, Tom replaced it with one he made out of pressure-treated lumber. Before installing the new window in the rough opening, Tom first fastened it to the new windowsill using caulk and screws. To fasten the window in place, Tom screwed the top of the window into the sill plate and secured the remaining edges using liquid spray foam insulation. After the foam had cured, Tom scraped away the excess and caulked around the outside perimeter using a masonry-colored caulk.
