Original Air Date: Week of 12/04/2008
Plumbing & heating expert Richard Trethewey heads to Indianapolis to help a pair of homeowners install a whole-house water filter. Then Richard, along with general contractor Tom Silva, landscaping contractor Roger Cook, and host Kevin O'Connor ask, "What is it?" Then Tom helps a homeowner repair a hole in a rubber roof and Richard shares a viewer tip for cutting PVC pipe without a saw.
Installing a whole-house water filter
Richard helps a pair of homeowners in Indianapolis by installing a new whole-house water filter. The homeowners experienced rust and sediment in their plumbing fixtures, so Richard selected a filter cartridge that filters out rust, sediment and chlorine. Installing the filter required cutting into copper piping in an area in which it would have been difficult to solder, so rather than use a propane torch and sweat fittings, Richard used a new type of "push fitting" that requires no soldering.

Repairing a leaky rubber roof
Tom helped a pair of homeowners repair a hole in their rubber roof that was causing water to leak into the ceiling below. The hole was caused by a metal ladder that had been bolted to the roof. Tom cut the rubber roof using a utility knife and removed the old, metal bracket and the damaged fiberboard substrate underneath. Next, Tom installed a new piece of fiberboard, fastened it with new screws and washers, and covered it with a new piece of rubber roofing held down with contact cement and a special "lap sealant."
Rubber roofing supplies are available at some lumberyards and building supply houses, such as:
