Landscaping contractor Roger Cook helps a homeowner transplant a giant Rhododendron bush. Then Roger, along with plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, general contractor Tom Silva, and host Kevin O’Connor ask, "What is it?" Then, Richard helps a homeowner increase his water pressure with an electric water pressure booster.

Transplanting a large Rhododendron bush.

Roger helped a pair of homeowners transplant a very large Rhododendron. Roger began by removing another shrub to allow greater access. He then chose a new location where the rhododendron will get about a half-day of sunlight. After digging a shallow hole in the new location, Roger dug around the root ball of the Rhododendron using a transplant shovel with a long blade. To move the shrub to its new location, Roger used a "compact utility loader" with a fork-like attachment that slid under the plant’s root ball and lifted it out of the ground. With the Rhododendron out of the ground, Roger prepared the new hole by adding compost to the existing soil and set the shrub into the hole. He then added fertilizer, backfilled the hole, and watered the soil thoroughly.

Roger used a "compact track loader" (Bobcat model #T300) to transplant the Rhododendron. It is available from Bobcat.

Installing an electric water pressure booster.

Richard helped a pair of homeowners with low water pressure. After determining that there was nothing wrong with the city water main coming into the house from the street, Richard recommended installing an electric water pressure booster, which consists of a pump and storage tank. Richard started by shutting off the main valve and draining all the water out of the supply pipes. Next, he ran new copper pipe from the water main to the pressure booster. Then, he ran pipe from the booster to the main line that feeds all the water fixtures in the house. When all the plumbing work was done, electrician Brian Bergeron connected the pressure booster to the main electrical panel using armored "metal clad" cable. The booster system required its own circuit, so Brian also installed a new circuit breaker inside the panel.
