Original Air Date: Week of March 18, 2006

Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner select and install a new dishwasher. Then, Richard, along with general contractor Tom Silva, landscaping contractor Roger Cook and host Kevin O'Connor ask, "What is it?" Then, up in the loft, Tom shows Kevin how to sharpen wood chisels using different types of sharpening stones. Then, Roger and Kevin head outside for some lessons on proper use of lawn spreaders.

Replacing an old dishwasher
Richard visits a homeowner with an old dishwasher that needs to be replaced. Together, they go to a local home center where an expert explains the features of several different models. After selecting a dishwasher, they head back to the house to install it. Richard begins by disconnecting the water, drain, and electrical connections and removing the old dishwasher. He then determines he must re-route the water supply line so that the new, larger dishwasher will fit in the cabinet recess. After connecting the new water supply line and electrical cable, Richard connects the dishwasher's new drain line to an opening in the sink's garbage disposer. He then fastens the dishwasher to the underside of the counter with brackets and screws and the installation is complete.

Where to Find It
Richard and the homeowner visited a Home Depot store to select the dishwasher.

Sharpening a wood chisel
Up in the loft, Tom shows Kevin how to sharpen wood chisels using different types of sharpening stones.

Where to Find It
A wide variety of sharpening stones exist in many sizes and price categories. Some are made of natural stone while others are synthetic. Some very expensive ones use diamonds that do the sharpening. Most stones use oil or water as a lubricant.

Tom showed a diamond-impregnated sharpener that uses water as a lubricant:
DuoSharp® Diamond Sharpener manufactured by: Diamond Machining Technology, Inc. (DMT)

Tom also showed an inexpensive, synthetic sharpening stone that uses oil as a lubricant: Economy Tool & Knife Sharpener (Combination Benchstone)
Norton Abrasives

These and other types of sharpening stones are available at your local home center or woodworking store.

Tom also showed a device that holds a chisel at the correct angle for sharpening.

Using lawn spreaders
Roger and Kevin head outside for a few lessons on the proper use of lawn spreaders. Spreaders are useful for adding the precise amount of certain lawn treatments like herbicide, lime, and fertilizer or for sowing new grass seed. Roger first shows a "drop" spreader, which simply drops material directly below the spreader. Roger also demonstrates a "broadcast" spreader, which uses an impeller to throw the material in a wider pattern. He mentions that, regardless of the type of spreader used, it is important to set the flow lever to the appropriate setting as indicated on the bag of material. Roger also mentions that walking at a uniform pace and holding the spreader at the correct angle will help ensure that the spreader distributes the proper amount of material.

Where to Find It
The red broadcast spreader is manufactured by:
Earthway Products

The green drop and broadcast spreaders are manufactured by:
Scotts Company

Spreaders, lime, fertilizer and grass seed can all be purchased at your local home center or nursery.
