Step Into the Parlor

The pocket doors in the front parlor from the dining room were not original to the house and were removed. The restored parlor featured a coal fireplaces with Eastlake-style mantles that were original to the home.

To even out the heart pine floor, 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch higher in different places, flooring contractor Mike Murray sanded with a 16-grit paper, turning to finer and finer sandpapers until the floor was ready for stain. The floors were sealed with a moisture-cured urethane finish that let in UV light that would enrich the floor’s patina, allowing it to darken with age. Refinishing all the floors in the house took 10 -12 days.

Homeowner Mills Fleming liked the parlor's Georgian-style medallion so much that he decided to copy here in the guest room. Fortunately, the restoration of the Lucas Theatre, built in 1921 by Fleming's grandfather, had brought third-generation plaster artisan Jean Francois Furieri to town. Furieri hand-crafted a replica of the parlor's plaster ceiling medallion, adding another elegant touch to an already dignified residence.
