More Than Just Pretty Paper

Master paperhanger Peter Bridgman worked his magic on the ceiling and walls using custom-designed Italianate patterns. The paper manufacturer provided a design service that measured the ceilings and noted the position of architectural details such as fireplaces, doors and mouldings. It created a design for each room using a combination of patterned papers and borders. Using a premixed, clay-based adhesive with a low water content, Bridgman first hung a field paper at the center of a room. Moving outward, he applied successive borders according to chalk lines he had carefully snapped to indicate exactly where each one fit. At the corners, he overlapped papers and made double-cut miter joints, keeping the backing paper on the bottom border while he cut so as not to damage the ceiling's surface. Papers and borders are often shipped oversized so that the design can be custom fit to the room. Bridgman completed a ceiling in approximately two and a half days.
