Making Beautiful Mosaic

Unlike ceramic tile, whose color sits on its surface, the porcelain tile used in the vestibule mosaic was colored all the way through. Conventional tools could not carve such intricate pieces; instead, a designer fed the mosaic plan into a computer that directed high-powered jets of water to cut tiles into the desired shapes. The tile was then laid in a two part epoxy on a lead pan. The end result: a stunning piece of craftsmanship that looked original to the house.
