From Trunk Room to Bathroom

The trunk room, originally used for storage, became the second upstairs bathroom and boasted the house’s only tub. Tile contractor Dennis Spikes gave the shower area a full "mud" job to insure that the tiles would last. He first nailed up waterproof green gypsum wallboard. Usually, tile is laid right on top of the gypsum. Instead, Spikes nailed up a painted metal lathe and laid a bed of mud on the wall. The lathe held up the concrete, a cement mixture that reinforced the wall and provided a smooth surface on which to lay the tiles. Spikes embedded plumb strips in the wall to even out any imperfections, filing in the gaps with concrete and trimming the excess with a straight edge. The wall was then ready for tiling.
