Upstairs, Downstairs

The Fleming house featured two grand staircases—a back stairs, unusual for a downtown home, and a formal front stairway. The back stairs remained largely untouched in the renovation and allowed the homeowners easy acces from the kitchen to upstairs rooms.

Structurally sound, the main staircase and front hall were transformed with paint, paper and a new lighting fixture. Master paperhanger Peter Bridgeman applied a ceiling and wallpaper design using custom Italianate patterns. To conserve space in the kitchen, the first-floor powder room was moved beneath the stairs.
