A Floor with a Heart of Pine

Friendly neighborhood termites munched through the dining room's strip oak floor but thankfully avoided the original one-inch-thick tongue and groove heart pine underneath. Flooring contractor Mike Murray first pulled off the shoe moulding and then pried up the oak floorboards, starting from the tongue edge where they were nailed. To even out the surface of the heart pine underneath, which was 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch higher in some places, Murray's crew sanded with 16-grit sandpaper, turning to finer and finer grits until the floor was ready for stain. The floors were finished with a water-based polyurethane that let in UV light to enrich the floor's patina. Refinishing all the floors in the house took 10-12 days.
