Dining Room: The Details
The dining room suffered more than other rooms.
Water damage caused layers of paint and wallpaper to peel, giving the owners a glimpse of the rooms
original wallpaper. The rest of the old paper peeled off in uneven strips that left the wall surface ragged. The crew used spackle to fill
cracks in the old plaster walls. But even that process left rough spots. To stabilize the walls and
ceiling for their elaborate new papers, paper hanger Don Taylor turned to a vapor-barrier paint and fiberglass fabric system.
He used a plastic wallpapering squeegee to embed fiberglass mat in the acrylic paint. Pieces of the mat were
then overlapped and double-cut to insure perfectly tight seams. The system left the finished surface perfectly smooth and ready for paper.
Unlike the parlor, the original dining room mantelpiece had been replaced. However, the inlaid tile
design surrounding the hearth was untouched.
The plaster medallion surrounding the light fixture survived unscathed. A fruit motif indicated that
this was the dining room. The old fixture was replaced with one of the houses two new crystal
chandeliers.
