Yankee Flash and Thrift
The downstairs dining room is an interesting study in contrasts. A built-in china cabinet,
fancy mantel, ornamental plaster mouldings and ceiling medallion bespeak a room that was an
important formal space. Yet look down and the floor reveals an old Yankee trick: cheap fir
flooring is used in the center of the room, where a carpet would have covered it.
