illustrated guide for how to lift heavy objects properly in yard and garden
Illustration: Jason Lee
Planting shrubs and mulching perennial beds can mean having to tote heavy pots and bags. To safely lift them, stand with the object directly in front of you. Without twisting, bend your knees, using leg muscles instead of your back to lift. Bending at the waist can result in pulled muscles or ligaments, or even a herniated disc.
