The Year of the Louse
"One Christmas Eve, as our family was dressing to go to midnight mass, one sister was heard to shout, 'Mom, Meg has bugs in her hair!' My mom went upstairs to check out this report, and found that Meg did, indeed, have bugs in her hair. I had never heard of such a thing, but my school teacher mother knew all about head bugs—it was lice. We spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day delousing. We washed linens, vacuumed rugs and mattresses, and shampooed and nit-combed hair for six girls (all with long, thick, curly hair). We laugh about it now and refer to that year's holiday as the Christmas of the Louse, but it sure wasn't the best. Here's hoping you have a bug-free Christmas at your house."
