Measuring Heights

To get a rough measurement of something you can't reach, extend a measuring tape until you have enough tape to make a triangle big enough for the middle segment to reach the object you're trying to measure. You might end up with one end of the object at, say, 53 inches and the other end at 39 inches, so your measurement would be 14 inches (53 minus 39).
