When John R. saw this Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, house, he knew it had potential. He and his wife did not hire anyone to provide guidance; rather they designed the additions and landscaping themselves. "This is not our expertise. It just took on a life of its own," he says. To make things more difficult, they had a baby during the first year of owning the house, and another in the house's fifth year. They were torn between spending time with their kids, and keeping the little ones safe while they gutted the interior of the home.
