Reusing High-Quality Wood: After

Who: Jon G.
Where: Chicago, IL

We tried to ensure that all materials were "green" in some respect, if possible: low-VOC paints and primers, reused building materials (except firebox), local artist tiles, and salvaged leaded-glass cabinet door. Plus, our place is short on space, so there are interior cabinets to store firewood behind the television. Most of the building materials came from a local building materials reuse center (ReBuilding Exchange in Chicago), so it was difficult to source complementary materials. Looking ahead, I tell my wife that I plan to spend an equal amount of time enjoying the fireplace as it took to build it!

Who did the work: I did most of the work myself
Cost: $1,000 to $5,000
