Getting Goats to do the Dirty Work

Mary Leo
Santa Rosa, CA

When we first moved into our home we were waist-high in poison oak. It was impossible to find anyone willing to clear it, and we're terribly allergic. After a while, we got smart and got some goats—free off Craigslist—which supposedly love it so much that they pull it out by the roots. When we got them home, however, Beemer and Scooter were kind of slackers. To get them interested, we had to handpick and hand-feed them—after covering ourselves head-to-toe in mineral oil and clothing. It worked: Poison oak is now their favorite entree.
