Scrounging Stone

Rick DeStito
Syracuse, NY

We wanted our new bathroom to have that spa-like feel, including a pebble floor spilling over from the shower. Have you priced out pebble flooring lately?!?! The good stuff is, like, $30-plus per square foot! I decided free would be a better price. We went as a family on road trips, visiting different creeks and other bodies of water, but came up with nothing at first. Finally, we heard about a lake with shores lined up and down with exactly what we were looking for. They are the most perfect pebbles. A few grueling trips pulling a stone-laden wagon up a steep bank to collect them, and a little more time spent setting each pebble by hand, and—voila!—a spa was born.
