The garden view was the inspiration for my design: five floor-to-ceiling windows and a French door. The most challenging part was the ceiling. I coffered the ceiling in order to give the illusion of more ceiling height, break up what would have been a huge expanse of flat ceiling, and draw attention away from the 11 LED lights. The biggest savings was having me do all of the work. We bought all of the pro appliances at one local supplier and negotiated the price. This project is a testament to all the things that I have learned by watching This Old House for the past 30-plus years.
Who did the work: I did all of the work myself
Cost: $25,000 to $50,000
