The whole thing turned out beautifully—and now my wife had the babies, and she is even cooking dinner most nights! We love the expanded storage space, the eat-in countertop (we didn't have any eat-in space in the kitchen before) and the built-in computer nook. By doing the work ourselves, acting as our own general contractor, and subbing out work as necessary, we were able to save money. We also saved by shopping around for appliances and using IKEA cabinets (even some panels from their scratch-and-dent area, if they aren't really seen in the kitchen).
Who did the work: I did most of the work myself Cost: $25,000 to $50,000
