The antique sink was something we had in our first home that I wanted to have if we ever remodeled. It was a leap of faith to design the whole kitchen around it while still keeping a modern look. The sink and range hearth added the character and quirkiness we love. We designed for max light, so we got rid of the upper cabinets for more windows. I love having a bar and banquette seating; now we can all cook together without playing roller derby.
We reused materials where possible: lighting, trim, and doors. We did a lot of demo and daily janitorial ourselves and are doing all of the exterior and interior painting. My husband did the entire base molding and built the banquette.
Who did the work: I did some of the work myself but a contractor did most of it Cost: More than $100,000
