We wanted a contemporary yet traditional feel and the look of a high-end cabinet line without the cost. With the exception of installing the gas cooktop and stainless-steel panels on the fridge, we did everything ourselves. All the drawer boxes, drawer fronts, and cabinet doors were made with my three favorite tools: a miter saw, a table saw, and a router table. My wife did the painting, tile work, and floor work. We splurged on the paint, using Fine Paints of Europe. It has a much higher pigment count than domestic paints, giving the cabinets a wonderful luster and beautiful hues in changing light.
We decided to remodel the kitchen after we agreed to have our home on a Holiday Homes Tour, which was less than six weeks away. On the weekends, 18-hour work days were the new norm. We completed the project in 34 days with less than two weeks to spare.
Who did the work: I did all of the work myself
Cost: $5,000 to $10,000
