Bright, Light, and Under $5,000: After

Who: Nancy W.
Where: Beloit, Wisc.

The paint technique took 13 steps for every single cabinet door, drawer, frame, etc., but all that work got me the great custom French Country look I wanted. My husband did the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. We took off cabinets over the fridge to make a "French hutch" next to it by adding corbels and ball feet to existing cabinets.

Who did the work: I did most of the work myself.

Cost: $1,000 to $$5,000
