When I saw an ad for free granite, I jumped on it. First, bottom cabinets were painted black, and the upper ones painted white. We tiled our backsplash, and an eat-in island was put on casters so that we could move the piece for buffets. A black-and-white tile floor completes the classic look. Very few cabinets were made, and the granite didn't have to be cut—we just made it fit our space.
Who did the work: I did some of the work myself, but a contractor did most of it.
Cost: $1,000 to $5,000
