You showed us your thriftiest redos. Now see which ones were finalists in our Reader Remodel Contest, as picked by you and the editors of This Old House
We started by replacing the countertops, sticking with laminate for cost but going with a cleaner color. We extended one edge of our kitchen island, adding counter space and creating a place to pull up a couple of stools. The oak cabinets were in decent shape, so we kept them and repainted them using a $5 gallon of "oops" paint that we "edited" using other paint we had until we were happy with the color. For a finished look, we wrapped beadboard around the island and installed corbels we found for $15.
