You showed us your stunning kitchen transformations. Now see which ones were finalists in our Reader Remodel Contest, as picked by you and the editors of This Old House
After: We do all of our own work, so naturally the kitchen remodel included building our own cabinets and countertops (a first for me), as well as all of the re-wiring, carpentry, plumbing, tilework, etc.
And just to make the job interesting, we found the soffit contained all of the wiring as well as ductwork, despite the assurance of our realtor that it would be completely empty! The cabinets were built in my basement woodshop and include hardwood frame and panel door and drawer fronts, dovetailed drawers, full extension slides, 40" uppers with glass doors, and a 9' wide floor to ceiling coffee bar in the adjacent eating area. The countertop is made of edge-glued walnut planks.
Who did the work: We did all the work ourselves. Cost: $5,000 to $10,000
